Dramaturgo y poeta inglés. Actor fallido, se dedicó a escribir y obtuvo un enorme éxito con Don Carlos (estrenada en 1676), la mejor de sus tragedias heroicas en verso. Otras obras teatrales de Otway son The Orphan [El huérfano], una tragedia en verso blanco, la comedia The Souldier's Fortune [La suerte del soldado] (1680) y su obra maestra, Venecia preservada (1682), que fue uno de los éxitos teatrales más resonantes de la Restauración. Precursor del drama sentimental, Otway se destaca por mostrar de un modo particularmente convincente las emociones humanas en una época de tragedias heroicas pero artificiales. The Poet's Complaint of His Muse [El poeta se queja de su musa] (1680) es un contundente poema autobiográfico de temple sombrío.
